Languages (8)

Spanish
One of the most widely spoken languages in the world, and a common first foreign language for English speakers. Verb conjugations follow highly regular patterns once you learn the system, and spelling closely matches pronunciation — what you see is almost always what you say.
Italian
Spoken by roughly 65 million people and closely tied to the Latin roots much of English vocabulary shares. Pronunciation is famously predictable — Italian is read almost exactly as it's spelled, which makes it one of the friendlier languages to start sounding confident in early.
German
Spoken by over 130 million people across Germany, Austria, and Switzerland. Known for compound nouns that glue several words into one — see why German words run so long for the logic behind it, and why a few only fit on the largest grid size here.
French
A Romance language whose vocabulary overlaps enormously with English, thanks to centuries of shared history. The trickiest part for most learners is that spelling and pronunciation diverge more than in Spanish or Italian — once that clicks, progress tends to speed up.
Portuguese (Brazil)
The more widely spoken global variant, used by over 200 million people, mostly in Brazil. Distinctive nasal vowel sounds set it apart from Spanish at first listen, even though the grammar is closely related.
Portuguese (Portugal)
Offered separately from Brazilian Portuguese because a genuine set of everyday words differ between the two — transport terms, tech vocabulary, and a few surprising false friends. See the full comparison for specifics.
Dutch
A Germanic language that sits linguistically between English and German, and it shows — a striking number of Dutch words are near-identical to their English counterparts, making it one of the more approachable languages here for English speakers.
Polish
The most grammatically complex language LingoPuzz currently teaches, with seven noun cases and consonant clusters that take real practice for an English speaker's mouth to produce. Also one of the most distinctive-sounding — a rewarding challenge if you want to push further than the Romance languages typically ask.
